Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Lisa Jackson lisa.jackson@ky.gov Media Line: 1-502-892-4425 Annie Hamilton Emond director@meadekychamber.org 270-422-3626 Meade County hosts ribbon-cutting ceremony for campground at Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area County assumes operation of campground at popular outdoor destination FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Meade County Fiscal Court and the Meade County Chamber of Commerce invite the community and media representatives to help celebrate a ribbon cutting for the Otter Creek Campground, nestled within the scenic surroundings of the Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled at noon (ET) on Thursday, March 28, signifying the transfer of operation of the campground from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to Meade County as part of the community's commitment to enhancing outdoor recreational camping in the area for nature enthusiasts, families and adventure seekers alike. “We are thrilled to be able to bring Otter Creek Campground under the umbrella of Meade County Parks and Recreation. My philosophy in making decisions on projects like these is that if it is good for our citizens, it is good for our county,” said Meade County Judge/Executive Troy Kok. “The citizens have been buzzing with excitement since word got out that we were collaborating with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife to operate the campground. Otter Creek has been such a large part of their lives with their families and will continue to be a part of the memories made with their children and grandchildren.” “Our new partnership with Meade County to assume operation of the campground at Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area is a mutually-beneficial decision for both parties and a benefit for visitors to the area,” said Ben Robinson, director of wildlife for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. “Meade County government is a great partner who is committed to operating and improving the campground for both visitors and the community. The new agreement will allow us to better focus our limited agency resources not only at Otter Creek, but also on nearby properties like the Yellowbank Wildlife Management Area that receive heavy use by residents of the region.” Founded by the National Park Service in 1934 as a recreational area for residents in Louisville and neighboring towns, Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area offers spectacular vistas of the Ohio River as well as opportunities for hunting, fishing, and numerous other outdoor recreational opportunities. To add much-needed hunting and fishing access for more than a million residents of Jefferson and neighboring counties, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife took over operation of the more than 2,200-acre property in 2011. “This has truly been a collaborative undertaking between Meade County Fiscal Court, our parks and recreation department, and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife,” Kok said. “We want to thank the chamber of commerce for their assistance in helping us celebrate this historic occasion with the citizens of Meade County and we cannot wait to see what the future holds in this endeavor.” For more information about Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area, visit fw.ky.gov or call the department’s Information Center at 800-858-1549, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (ET), Monday to Friday, excluding holidays. ### Editor’s note - We encourage members of the media to attend and cover this event, which highlights Meade County's commitment to promoting tourism, conservation and community development. The event will feature remarks from local officials, followed by the ceremonial ribbon-cutting to officially inaugurate the campground. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the campground facilities and experience the natural beauty of Otter Creek Outdoor Recreational Area firsthand.
